An underwriter is responsible for reviewing direct endorsement underwriter\\\'s analysis to verify reliability of ratings on all elements of risk. Specific duties of an underwriter include reviewing contestable claims; performing on-site quality reviews; underwriting life, major medical and disability income applications; reviewing and evaluating non-standard applications and supporting documents; determining additional documentation required; requesting additional information as needed; communicating with employees and stakeholders regarding underwriting procedures and insurance policies; working on special underwriting projects; working in limited supervision or independently and performing several other tasks as required. An underwriter typically reports to an insurance director.
An underwriter should have a BA/BS degree. Excellent academic credentials are essential. Several years of experience in medical or property underwriting may be required. Strong mathematical ability and proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office applications are required.
