What does an insurance fraud investigator do? In this article, you'll discover what the qualifications and responsibilities of insurance fraud investigators are, as well as learn what the current job market for insurance fraud investigators is like.

With the help of a few Hollywood movies, I was introduced to the role of an insurance fraud investigator. In his film The Curse of the Jade Scorpion, Woody Allen plays an insurance fraud investigator, while Guy Pearce plays a former insurance fraud investigator in the movie Memento. And in I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry, Adam Sandler and Kevin James, who try to scam their health insurance company by pretending to be gay, are investigated by insurance fraud investigators.

So what do these investigators do? According to the www.insurance.ca.gov website, ''Fraud investigators conduct felony criminal investigations of insurance fraud and related penal statues, both State and Federal.'' But what are the qualifications and responsibilities of an insurance fraud investigator? With the help of the aforementioned website, I’ve discovered the answers to both. Let’s get started.

What Are the Qualifications Required to Become an Insurance Fraud Investigator? A Four-Year Degree or a Two-Year Degree Plus Two Years of Field Experience

Those interested in becoming insurance fraud investigators must (typically; see below) have a four-year college degree in any of the following disciplines:

  • Criminal justice
  • Law enforcement
  • Criminology
  • Administration of justice
  • Police science
Insurance fraud investigator candidates should also consider minoring in:

  • Law enforcement
  • Criminology
  • Administration of justice
  • Police science, with completed courses in Introduction to Criminal Justice; Introduction to Criminal Law; Basic Investigation, Evidence, Criminal Procedure; and Philosophy of Law.
If those interested in becoming insurance fraud investigators don’t want to complete a full four-year degree, however, they can meet the necessary minimums by completing a two-year degree and spending two years gaining experience as a peace officer in ''criminal investigative assignments in a government agency.''

Other important qualifications include ''recent experience in State service as a peace officer investigating auto, workers’ compensation, property, and casualty insurance fraud; ability to serve as [a] liaison with other law enforcement and prospective agencies in the region; [and] verbal and written fluency in Spanish.''

What Are the Responsibilities of an Insurance Fraud Investigator? These Include Arrests, Interrogations, and Working Undercover

The following list of responsibilities is taken directly from www.insurance.ca.gov:

  • Fraud Investigators make arrests, interrogate suspects, interview witnesses, work with informants, prepare comprehensive written reports, and utilize sophisticated surveillance and electronic evidence gathering equipment.

  • Fraud Investigators are expected to work undercover and testify as expert witnesses for prosecutors in State and Federal Courts.

  • Fraud Investigators must work unusual hours on short notice and also travel throughout the state.
Current Job Market

In West Virginia, according to a report put out in April 2008 by indeed.com, insurance fraud investigators are, on average, earning $45,000 per year. And according to Salary.com, fraud investigator officers earn between $46,166 and $63,174 per year.

Final Thoughts on Insurance Fraud Investigators

Although it was movies that introduced me to the role of the insurance fraud investigator, it was the facts that drew me in. Arrests, interrogations, using ''sophisticated surveillance'' — the responsibilities of an insurance fraud investigator sound exciting, to say the least. That said, it takes years of hard work and dedication to even begin accomplishing the tasks that these real investigators do every day.
