Role Value Proposition:
This senior counsel will primarily provide legal advice to MetLife’s U.S. group insurance businesses (including disability, dental and supplemental accident and health products). The attorney will focus on legal questions and issues related to regulation of group insurance products and advise on legal issues relating to product development and design, marketing, sales, and administration.
Provide legal support in connection with U.S. group life and accident and health insurance.
Draft or review a variety of documents, including regulatory filings, policyholder notices, and other communications and marketing materials.
Draft and negotiate customer, third-party administrator, and vendor agreements.
Conduct or coordinate legal research regarding U.S. group life and accident and health insurance.
Assess and communicate legal and regulatory risks associated with U.S. group life and accident and health insurance and counsel the business partners on ways to effectively mitigate such risks.
Essential Business Experience and Technical Skills:
Law degree (J.D. or equivalent) and bar admission required with a minimum of six years of relevant legal experience, preferably with a strong record of in-house success
Deep subject matter expertise in most or all of the following areas: group insurance, employee benefits, and ERISA law and regulation
Ability to handle complex legal matters with minimal oversight while escalating significant issues in a timely fashion
Sound judgement, a high degree of professionalism, and an ability to prioritize and adhere to deadlines
Communicates clearly, concisely and persuasively with a variety of internal stakeholders (corporate business partners, team members, functional colleagues, etc.), works collaboratively and builds effective partnerships.
Prior experience advising on group insurance.
