Under minimal supervision, an Underwriter works closely with other members of the company and will need to be proficient at the companies underwriting procedures, medical terminology, physiology, anatomy, pharmacology, insurance guidelines, underwriting operations and risk appetite. This position requires the individual to review all information associated with the applicant, and make final decisions on the application for insurance in accordance with specified guidelines. The individual must be aware and follow certain reinsurance guidelines and industry best practices.
The ideal candidate should possess strong interpersonal skills, ability to demonstrate outstanding levels of customer service, analytical, and detailed orientated.
Reviews all pertinent information provided during an application process, and makes the final determination to issue, decline, amend rate, and/or postpone underwriting decision.
Orders and reviews other underwriting reports or metrics, to properly evaluate risk.
May conduct additional interviews with the agent submitting the risk or the applicant. This could include asking additional medical history questions that may be personal in nature, while maintaining a positive demeanor.
Managing additional underwriting requirements to make the proper assessment to perform accurate risk analysis.
Data entry of all information into Germania’s proprietary system, and document all records as needed.
Demonstrate dependability, organization, sound judgement, meet all standards for productivity, quality and performance.
Ability to answers complex inquiries of available products, policies, procedures, requirements, quotes, and other changes.
Must have a comprehensive understanding and abide with HIPAA regulations.
Prepares claims for joint approval of Company and reinsurers. Corresponds with beneficiaries, agents, funeral homes and reinsurers on claim matters.
Works with reinsurance companies as needed to resolve questions associated with underwriting and claim matters.
Approves reinstatements and changes to existing policies within binding authority limits.
Conducts coding and reporting for MIB (Medical Information Bureau) on new business cases where underwriting/MIB codes are necessary.
Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent work experience as a Life Insurance Underwriter required.
Life Insurance Underwriter with binding authority up to at least a $250,000 and reinsurance binding authority up to a substandard table 6 rating required.
Designation such as ACS, LOMA Underwriting, ALMI, ALU, preferred.
Candidate must currently hold a valid Texas Life License.
Strong knowledge of life insurance terms, forms, medical terminology, medical conditions pharmacology, and medical records preferred.
Must be able to read, understand and code lab results, exams and medical records.
Must be prepared to provide product information, illustrations, proposals and premium amounts in a sales role to prospective insured by selling over the phone or by online leads.
Extensive knowledge of life products, the ability to interpret policy provisions, underwriting guidelines, and knowledge of administrative practices relating to company procedures.
Extensive knowledge of production schedules and time frames in the life cycle of a policy—including payment modes, calculation and modal premiums, reinstatement provisions and cancellation provisions.
Strong computer and keyboard skills that include the Microsoft Office programs.
