Job Summary
Under close supervision, manages large exposure and/or complex environmental litigation/claims on a regional or national basis with the goal of developing the strategy for resolving a myriad of claim and coverage issues. Position requires development of advanced knowledge of legal issues (including a solid knowledge of applicable case law) for a number of jurisdictions. Factors contributing to the complexity of the claims include the nature of the underlying liability, the unique coverage issues presented, the existence of coverage disputes/litigation, the number of class-action and multi-plaintiff matters, volatile jurisdictions, the evolving nature of the legal decisions relating to the liability and coverage issues presented, the interpretation and application of complex settlement agreements and the highly technical nature of the coverage and liability issues. Will handle relatively less complex and financially significant litigation and claims within the range of matters in Strategic Resolution Group (SRG). This job does not manage others.
Primary Job Duties & Responsibilities
Participate in on-going training sessions on SLG claim handling. Work closely with supervisor or mentor to resolve assigned claims. Coverage Research and Analysis - Responsible for researching policies and analyzing coverage. Prepares and reviews position with supervisor. Presents recommendations to management or coverage committee. With supervisor, communicates coverage position to policyholders or their representatives. Liability Investigation and Analysis - In consultation with supervisor, conducts thorough investigation and analysis of claim facts to determine liability. Acquires knowledge of relevant legal concepts in jurisdiction to evaluate damages and to develop recommendation for appropriate course of action. Litigation Management - In consultation with supervisor, develops and executes a strategic file management plan, including as appropriate: litigation and resolution strategies; management of loss adjustment expenses; engagement of appropriate experts; use of proper settlement and release language. May attend meetings with counsel, settlement conferences. Account Management - Acquiring knowledge and understanding of assigned accounts in actions and decisions. Maintains effective working relationships with other account contacts; ensures claims and settlement agreements are handled in a consistent manner. Responsible for regular communication and reporting to coordinate / align actions on assigned accounts. Financial Analysis - With guidance from supervisor, estimates financial exposures on an individual claim and account basis. Develops budgets and financial analyses, estimating defense expenses and/or indemnity. File Maintenance and Administrative Compliance - Maintains documentation and organization of claim files; maintains systems and data bases. Efficiently manages the file inventory. Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
HS Diploma / GED required. In order to perform the essential functions of this job, acquisition and maintenance of Insurance License(s) may be required to comply with state and Travelers requirements. Generally, license(s) must be obtained within six months of starting the job.
Education, Work Experience & Knowledge
Bachelors degree is preferred. Some work, volunteer or internship experience is required. Law-related or claim-related experience is preferred.
